History

Saint Eloi was born in 588, with Chaptelat. He learns his trade from Orfèvre to the workshop of Limoges, then will work with Paris under the orders of the treasurer of the king. Its talent and its probity point out it by Clotaire II which makes its Trésorier of it; but it is especially the confidence of the king Dagobert who allows Éloi saint to deploy all his capacities of minister. Holder of the évêché of Boundary-line, holy Éloi however has the nostalgia of the native land: at this point in time he asks for to the king the ground of Solignac to found there the Monastère where he intends to go to die in peace. “ My king and Master, that your kindness wants to grant to me so that I can build there a scale for you and me, by whom we will deserve to assemble both in the kingdom of heaven . ” The king answered this request favorably. The first abbot was holy Remacle which left the Abbaye a few years to be appointed later bishop of Maastricht.

The followed rule was that of Luxeuil, i.e. it was inspired by the regulations of Saint Colomban and of holy Benoît. At the 8th century, the abbey is several times ransacked by the Sarrasins causing many damage; following that, the monks receive privileges which will be confirmed during the centuries by the successive popes. In 820, the abbot Aigulf imposes the rule Bénédictin E, forty years later, the abbey is set fire to and plundered by the Viking S.

With 12th and 13th centuries, strong of the royal and rich protection of its Relics, the Abbaye controlled nearly twenty parish churches and had grounds in Mountain the Limousin E, among which the Château of Chalucet, and in the Low Limousin (the current Corrèze). The commercial borough, located on the North-South axis which connects Périgueux to Limoges, developed out of the ramparts which girdled the abbey field. The current abbey one was built at that time: in first half of the 12th century, one built the Nef, in second half the chorus and the Transept (after the fire of 1178) and the bell-tower-porch at the beginning of the 13th century. In 1388, bands English be set fire to the chorus of the church.

Ruined at the 16th century by the wars of religion and the revolts country, the abbey was raised during the catholic Counter-Reformation, when in 1619, the abbot, according to the example of the abbey of Saint-Augustin to Limoges, called upon six monks of Saint-Maur who restored the rule bénédictine. But they ran up against the hostility of the monks in place; the abbey was divided and the maurists were satisfied with a small vault until death carries the opponents. Given in state, the abbey one found its function in 1635. Hundred years later, the Cloister and the buildings Conventuels were entirely rebuilt.

At the 18th century the commune bore the name of Salignac (cf Carte of Cassini)

The abbey, which counted fourteen more Moine S with the Révolution, knew then many vicissitudes. Boarding school of young girls under the Empire, it was converted into factory of Porcelaine under Louis XVIII, and this, until the crisis of the years 1930. The normaliens of Obernai (the Low-Rhine) there found refuge of 1939 with 1945. With the Oblats of Marie which took possession in 1946 of it, the buildings found their spiritual vocation, initially like Séminaire, then like place of retreat.
