Solifugae
The solifuges are Arachnide S and hold their name of Latin who means " which flees the sun ". This order includes 900 known species.
The majority of the solifuges live in the tropical and semi-tropical areas, preferring the hot and dry areas, although certain species live in greener zones and forests. The greatest characteristic of the solifuges is to have broad Chélicère S. Each of both chélicères is made up of two articles forming a grip. Each article increases a variable number of teeth. All males, except for those of Eremobatidae , has a Flagelle on the basal article of the chélicère. Solifuges also have the long ones Pédipalpe S, whose sensory role is similar to that of the antenna S of the others Arthropode S. the pédipalpes are adhesive.
The solifuges are carnivorous or Omnivore S, the majority nourishing Termite S, of ladybird S and other small Arthropode S. the preys are localized thanks to the pédipalpes, killed and cut out by the chélicères. They are then liquefied by the gastric juices out of the body; the liquid is then aspired by the mouth. The reproduction can include a transfer of Sperme direct or indirect: if it is indirect, the male produced a Spermatophore which it deposits on the ground then that it will deposit in the genital pore of the female using its chélicères.
As their name indicates it, Solifuges are mainly night S and seek the shade during the day. It is this behavior which brought the American soldiers posted in Iraq to think that these Arachnides attacked them, whereas they sought simply shade near the tents of the sodats.
Myths
Solifuges are the object of many Mythe S and exaggerations in connection with their size, speed, behavior, appetite and dangerosity. They are not particularly large, the record reaching ten centimetres, and although more rapids that the others Arthropode the S, fastest must run to 16 km/h. The representatives of this kind do not have a Venin and do not prick. The belief wants that Solifuges American inject an anesthetic substance with human making a nap in nature, and benefit then from the situation to devour part of the flesh, the victim awaking with an open wound! Solifuges do not produce any anesthetic and never individuals larger than they attack, except defending their offspring. Because of their strange appearance and his private individual whom they produce when they feel threatened, much of people is afraid of it. The greatest threat that they can represent for the Man is the bite which they can carry out when they are handled. It is likely no there to die of this bite, but the muscles of the chélicères being powerful, this one can involve a large wound which can be infected.
