Solid mass of Chartreuse

The massive of Chartreuse is a subalpine link located at the three quarters in Isere and at the quarter in Savoy.

It gave its name to the Monastère of the Grande Chartreuse.

The inhabitants of the solid mass are the Chartrousins , not to confuse with the order to which the monks (" belong; chartreux" , order cartusien).

Situation

It rises between Grenoble (in the south), Chambéry (in north), Voiron and Saint-Laurent-du-Pont (in the west) and the Grésivaudan (valley of the Isere, in the east).

It is bordered by the Massif of Vercors and the plain of the Isere in the west and south-west, the chain of Belledonne and the valley of the Grésivaudan in south-east and the east, and the solid mass of the Bauges in the North-East. It is next to also, in the North-West, the Chaîne of the Spine which is regarded as one of the southernmost tops of the Massif of the Jura.

Relief

The tops of the solid mass of Chartreuse are composed mainly of Calcaire urgonien, which surmounts marly layers more . This generally results in long North-South directed watersheds. The rivers Sharp Guiers and Guiers Mort run towards the west and incise the solid mass deeply.

Principal tops

  • Chamechaude (2 082 m, culminating point)
  • the Tooth of Crolles (2 062 m)
  • the Lances of Malissard (2 045 m)
  • the Large Som (2 026 m)
  • the Granier (1 933 m). The collapse of one of its faces, in 1248, is probably the greatest known crumbling of the history of the Europe. One estimates the number of victims at 5.000. This cataclysm gave rise to the one of the largest cliffs limestones of France (700 m of cliff).
  • the Large Sour (1 920 m)
  • the Charming Som (1 867 m)
  • the Small Som (1 772m)

History

Foundation about the Carthusian monks

The Monastère of the Grande Chartreuse was founded in 1084 by holy Bruno. It is the head office about the Chartreux. Before becoming what it is, the monastery, which was at the beginning a simple hermitage in the middle of the Desert of Chartreuse had to resist many tests: schism, Reform and French revolution, fires, Avalanche S.

The monastery is not visited (it is even prohibited to fly over it), but a museum is installed in Correrie, downstream. One can see there reconstitutions of cells of monks.

The liquor of the fathers Carthusian monk, or Chartreuse, is now produced with Voiron, the foot of the solid mass.
