Solex
The company of mechanics Solex was created towards 1905 by Maurice Goudard and Marcel Mennesson, both centraliens. It was known for its Carburateur S and its Cyclomoteur, the Vélosolex.
History of the Solex mark
In 1905, creation of the Solex company which manufactures Radiateur S Centrifuge, then Carburateur S.In 1916, Marcel Mennesson makes an patent application for an auxiliary engine to place in the center of the aft wheel, this patent to him will be granted on December 31st 1917.
In 1918, a second patent is deposited it will be delivered in May 1919 for a far-sighted complete two-wheeled vehicle: a framework made up of a single tube of broad section active of the saddle to the steering column while passing by puts back foot, as well as a front suspension by pendular fork. These patents will never be followed of a setting in production.
In 1940, Marcel Mennesson makes construct a prototype of Moteur. The characteristics are those of Solex truth: Cubic capacity of 38 cm ³, a Transmission by roller, the cylinder shifted compared to the wheel axle and the Carburizing on constant level with return of the surplus towards the tank. In December 1940, this engine is installed on a bicycle of man Alcyon with large wheels of 700, color black with nets but, it is thus the first model of VéloSolex.
In 1946, the first VéloSolex will be sold in April, they are produced with Courbevoie at rate of 15 machines per day and they cost 13.600 FRF (in old francs, that is to say 20,73€) part. In 1973, the part Carburateur S is taken again by Matra, it will be then taken again by Magneti-Marelli.
In 1974, Renault and Motobécane take again the Solex mark.
In 1983, Motobécane is repurchased by Yamaha and becomes MBK.
In 1988, the production of Solex in France, with Saint-Quentin, stops.
In 1998, the group Magneti-Marelli (FIAT) takes again the Solex mark. It grants to Hungarian Impex a user license, but this adventure will end in a bankruptcy.
In June 2004, the Target group repurchases the mark in order to market the E-Solex: electric Solex.
In 2004, the trade of the Vélosolex continues in an active way on the Web site of auctions, Ebay.
Vélosolex , Solex and Solexine (fuel developed by BP at the request of Solex ) is registered trademarks. For this reason, these terms must be written with an initial capital .
