A soil indicates a geographical space regarded as homogeneous through the resource S which it is likely to bring, in particular (but not only) by its agricultural specialization .

A ground and men

The soils result from the exploitation by an human society of the potentialities of a physical space. Their definition depends closely on the characters of the Civilization which occupies the grounds. Thus, in the same space, with potentialities and physical constraints identical, different human society is likely to develop distinct soils.

The soil is thus a concrete, tangible space and cartographiable through multiple factors (geographical: Pedology, Geology, Geomorphology, Hydrology, Climatology, Microclimate, Exposure, etc). But it also has a cultural dimension which directly reflects the human society which exploits it. This aspect is found in abundance in the literary and identity use of the " soil ".

Wine soils

The precision of the definition of a soil depends on the acuity with which the men perceive and control the factors which allocate the exploited resource. Extreme cases are reached on the wine grounds where the notion is sometimes applied to the scale of the piece (the quality of the Vin is affected by microphone-local conditions).

The INAO declared the year 2005 like “ Année of the soils ”, and supported the organization of conferences and debates, by considering that, by no means obsolete or exceeded by the oenological processes, the concept of Terroir feeds more than ever the debates around the future of the Vin. Moreover, the INAO publishes a book " Taste of the origin ".

Soil and territory

Although of the same etymological origin , a Territoire is not equivalent to a soil . The territory generally gathers different soils, which makes it possible to vary its resources. Thus, the village communities seek to exploit inside same the Finage fields, wood, pastures…
