Softwar (the soft war) is a novel, thriller technological, of Thierry Breton and Denis Beneich published in 1984 with the Éditions Robert Laffont (ISBN: 2221044266).

Synopsis

The novel puts in Brendan scene, teaching in data processing American, recruited by the National Software Agency or NSA (service which presents similarities with the National Security Agency ), and Ioulia, one of its Soviet former students , during the Années 1980, into full Cold war between the the United States of America and the the USSR.

The history begin with the sale with Soviet on behalf of France from a weather station of calculation CRAY-1 and associated software. Benefitting from a control on strategic exports towards the USSR, the station is equipped secretly with a software Bombe by agents of the NSA. The station of calculation falls precisely broken down the day from a visit of Soviet authorities and refonctionne normally the following day without no intervention being necessary. Ioulia and its assistant understand that some additional lines of code make inopérationnelle the station of calculation so certain weather data of the island of Saint-Thomas, of the United States Virgin Islands, forward by the computer.

When Ioulia with opportunity of controlling a new station of calculation coming from the Occident, it starts to inquire into this one and arrives has to determine that there is an anomaly, not on the American computer, but on the peripheral computers, of Soviet design. After checking, she discovers that all the Soviet computers were modified physically by the addition of an external component of control containing processor Z80 and of two ROMANIAN S. the password " VENIK" placed by whoever at a precise address of the random access memory causes the integral obliteration of the software and the physical destruction of the computers concerned, involving the unquestionable paralysis of all the activity (transport, electricity, industry…) area controlled by these computers.

It includes/understands whereas in fact the Soviet secret services added this system in order to have an effective means of pressure on the country or an area given in the event of political or military problem.

It is missionnée by Mikhaïl Gorbatchev, whereas he is not yet president of the USSR, to go to Geneva in order to denounce the misdeeds of American at the time of a top extremely mediatized. His/her ex-lover and former professor with the Massachusetts Institute off Technology, Brendan, charged to discourage from it to make his official declaration, manage to meet her the day before. Ioulia then reveals its discovery and its intention to him to give up denouncing American sabotage. It enjoint Brendan to diffuse near the press information on its discovery so that the Soviet secret services are encouraged to withdraw the secret system of destruction which they set up.
