Sofía of Greece

The queen Sofía de Grecia (Sophía Margaríta Viktoría Frideríki tis Elládas, in Greek Σοφία Μαργαρίτα Βικτωρία Φρειδερίκη της Ελλάδας), in French Sophie of Greece was born the November 2nd 1938 with Athens. His/her father is the king Paul I {{er}} of Greece and his/her mother is the Frederika queen (born princess Frederika from Hanover). She has for younger brother the former king Constantin II of Greece and as a younger sister the princess Irene by Greece.

The May 14th 1962, it marries in Athens the prince Juan Carlos of Spain which becomes in 1975 king Juan Carlos Ier, succeeding the general Franco, which directed the country since 1936. Juan Carlos Ier restores the democracy in Spain, with the discrete assistance of his wife. They refused to live the royal palace of the East in Madrid, which is intended from now on for the receptions, with the profit of the modest field of Zarzuela. Breaking with the traditions, they did not want to found Court. The Sophie queen does not have a lady-in-waiting and never wears hats, which differentiates it from the other sovereign ones of Europe.

Thanks to her rigorous education the queen speaks German, English, Spanish, French and Greek.

From this union were born two girls, Elena (1963) and Cristina (1965) and a son Felipe (1968). The king and the queen currently have eight grandchildren.

Elena married in 1995 Jaime de Marichalar. Titrated duke and duchess of Lugo, they have two children: Felipe and Victoria. The infante Elena is third in the order of succession with the throne.

Cristina married in 1997 the player of handball Iñaki Urdangarin which it had met one year earlier with the Olympic Games of Atlanta. They live in Barcelona and were titrated duke and duchess of Palma de Majorque. They have four children: Juan, Pablo, Miguel and Irene.

Titrated prince of Asturies in 1977, prince Felipe married in 2004 the journalist Spanish Letizia Ortiz. They live in the field of Zarzuela close to Madrid and are the parents, since October 2005, of small a infante Leonor which is currently second in the order of succession with the throne of Spain behind his/her father. This position could be called in question if an younger brother had suddenly been born, this as long as the rules of devolution of the Crown will not have been modified by a revision of the Spanish constitution. Wanting to avoid the media competition that knew prince Charles and the Diana princess of England, Letizia never appears alone in public but always accompanied by her husband. Their deuxièle girl, the infante Sofía, was born in May 2007.

She is honorary member of the Club of Rome.
