Sodium carbonate
The soda carbonate or sodium carbonate is a compound having for Na2CO3 formula.
In the language running, one also speaks about washing soda. The soda carbonate bore the soda name a long time, but it should not be confused with the caustic soda.
Obtaining
The soda carbonate can be obtained starting from layers of Natron. In the past, one found it in the natron but also in the Cendre S of Algue S (Varech or goémon in Brittany) or of plants (Salicorne in the Mediterranean).
The Procédé Leblanc was elaborate in 1789. The Proceeded Solvay which produces sodium carbonate starting from salt and of Craie supplanted it since 1870 because less expensive and more favorable to the environment.
Properties
The soda carbonate is not Toxique for the Environnement. It can be irritating on the Peau and it is thus preferable to handle it with gloves.
The soda carbonate should not be confused with the caustic Soude nor with the Bicarbonate of soda, used in kitchen, in particular in the development of the gingerbreads.
The sodium carbonate reacts with the majority of the acids to give carbon dioxide. It also precipitates by exchange of ions, several soluble metal salts.
