Sodium arsenite

The arsenite of sodium or arsenite of soda is a active substance of Produit plant health (or Produit phytopharmacological, or Pesticide), which presents an effect Fongicide, and which belongs to the chemical family of the arsenical .

Regulation

In the field of the regulation of the phytopharmacological products:

for the European Union: this active substance is not registered with appendix I of the Directive 91/414/CEE. The payment 2076/2002/CE of November 20th, 2002 imposes on the Member States:

to withdraw the marketing authorizations of the preparations containing sodium arsenite at the latest on July 25th, 2003,
to prohibit the use of these preparations at the latest on December 31st, 2003.

for the France: this active substance is not authorized in the composition of preparations profiting from a marketing authorization. In France, the ministry for Agriculture and Fishing, prohibited the marketing and the use of products containing of soda arsenite starting from November 8th, 2001. It was not authorized of time of flow of soda arsenite stocks.

This Fongicide was used in Viticulture to fight against the ESCA of the vine. The soda arsenite presents a curative effect for the stocks contaminated by this disease.

Studies showed that this plant health Produit, classified among the carcinogenic substances, proves to be dangerous for the health of the users in spite of the precautions which are taken during its application. This decision was made following the scientific opinion Commission of study of the toxicity of the pest-destroying products of May 2001, recommending the prohibition of arsenite of soda, and with the proposal for a withdrawal of the marketing authorizations, without delay of flow of stocks, was emitted by the Committee of homologation in July 2001.
