Sodankylä

Sodankylä , commune of Finnish Lapland, is the second municipality of Finland by the surface. It is for this reason wider than countries like the Lebanon or the Jamaica. It is known in particular to shelter the festival of film of the midnight sun, festival created by the brothers Mika and Aki Kaurismäki in 1986 and whose success is not contradicted since. Sodankylä is the seat of the Jääkäriprikaati , or Brigade Jaeger, unit of elite of the Army Finnish.

Geography

The municipality is bordered in north by the commune of Inari, in the east by Savukoski and Pelkosenniemi, in the west by Kittilä and the south by Rovaniemi. It has even a small border with the Russia in the North-East.

The commune presents the form of a quadrilateral a length of approximately 160 km for 60 km (in the south) to 100 km (in north) broad. The village center is located at 128 km of the center of Rovaniemi, in the southern part of the municipality, on the edges of the Kitinen.

The territory of the municipality is crossed by the rivers Kitinen and Luiro, cut in their descent towards the Kemijoki by the two more important storage reservoirs of Finland, respectively Portipahta and Lokka. Main road 4 (E75) goes up full north along Kitinen in direction of Ivalo and the Arctic Ocean.

The essence of the commune is not very undulating on the scale of the Lapland, with only of small reliefs of altitude seldom higher than 400 meters, except for the mount Luosto, Tunturi insulated in southern edge, protected in the National park from Pyhä-Luosto.

The north-eastern part of the municipality is on the other hand very different, it is protected besides within the framework from the national park Urho Kaleva Kekkonen and from the neighbouring protected areas. It is initially the solid mass of the Natanen, a group of Tunturi S right in the north of the Lake Lokka. Lastly, it is the chain of Saariselkä, an old solid mass of Granulite having resisted the glaciers, culminating with the Sokosti with 718 meters of altitude.
