Socompa
The Socompa is a nonextinct stratovolcano, but currently at rest, which is at the border between IIe area Chile enne of Antofagasta and the province Argentine of Salta (Département of Los the Andes).
Its altitude is of 6 051 meters.
History
The Socompa volcano because an enormous cataclysm, there is some 7 200 years. During a violent eruption plinienne, all its north-western quarter exploded and was spread obliquely in Chilean territory. There were collapse and slip of masses of rocks until more than 34 km of their starting site. The quantity of materials thus broken down and dispersed reached 50 kilometers cubic. Currently the volcano thus has the form of a " coin" at south-eastern top. One names this one " amphithéâtre" of Socompa.The volcano dominates of very close the collar of the Paso Socompa, as well as the railway and the small road which borrow it.
