The PDSR lost the legislative elections of 1996, which were gained by a coalition multi-parties, the Rumanian democratic Convention (CDR).

Its victory and the defeat of former president Ion Iliescu was a great surprise. The media allotted the victory of Geoană to the agreements of last minute of the leaders of the party opposed to Iliescu as well as to the blunders made by Iliescu to the platform of the congress, of which use of old communist terms to appoint these colleagues of the party.
