Social democrat party (Estonia)

The social democrat Left (Estonian: Sotsiaaldemokraatlik Erakond ) or SDE , sometimes shortened in SotsDem), is a Political party Estonia N, directed by Ivari Padar. This party is member of the European Socialist party (PSE) since 2003 and of the Internationale Socialist since November 1990.

It has 10 deputies with the Riigikogu since March 4th, 2007 (57 740 votes and 10,5%) and belonged to the coalition government with the Parti the reform. It was known like the moderate Party of the people ( Rahvaerakond Mõõdukad ) and under this name 6 deputies at the time of the elections of the Riigikogu in 2003 gained. By obtaining 36,8% of the voices and 3 deputies, it gained the first elections with the the European Parliament in Estonia.

History

Social democracy in Estonia of 1917 with 1940

The Social-démocratie appeared in Estonia at the beginning of the 20th century. It was influenced by the ideas come from Western Europe or Russia. Its influence was spread in 1905. The social democrats formed their party in 1917. At the beginning, its name was " Social democrat association estonienne". Of patriotic inspiration, they fought for the independence of Estonia and social justice. The name of the movement became " Estonian social democrat party of the travailleurs" and they gained the elections (1/3 of the votes and 41 seats out of 120). They wrote the first Estonian constitution and solved the rural problem in a democratic way. The name of the party changed again: it became the " Estonian socialist party of the travailleurs" in 1925, following fusion with the Estonian Socialist party independent of the workers . It occupied the capacity of 1924 with 1925, then of 1928 with 1929. They gained the elections of 1926 (24%) and 1929 (25%). Constituting one of the greatest parties of Estonia, they had contacts with other social democrats of Europe and belonged to the Internationale Socialist. They instituted a law of cultural autonomy and gave its chance to the promotion of the cultural life and educational. The party was dissolves in 1935, when ended the democratic era in Estonia. After the beginning of the Soviet occupation, the leaders escaped towards the free world and continued their work in exile, in Sweden, with Stockholm.

From 1989 to our days

Benefitting from the new political freedoms granted by the Perestroika, the Estonian Social democrat Party (Eesti Sotsiaaldemokraatlik Partei, ESDP) resulting from various movements socio-democrats is created in 1990. This party is born by the fusion of the Party of the Estonian Democratic Work of Saatpalu Bicycle, of the Party of the Social democrat Independence Estonian of Marju Lauristin, of the Russian Social democrat Party in Estonia de Jossiv Jurovski and of the Association from Abroad of the Estonian Socialist party (successor of the Party of the Estonian Socialist Workers in exile). Marju Lauristin was the first leader of the ESDP. The relations are restored with the International Socialist in 1990. The ESDP forms an electoral alliance in 1992 and 1995 with a center agrarian movement, the Party of the Estonian Rural Center. In 1996, after a defeat at the polls, this trust chooses to arise under the banner of the " Modérés" (Mõõdukad). In 1999, another agrarian movement of the center joint to the coalition, the Popular party which concluded thus a bringing together started since 1998. In 2003, the Moderate ones integrate the Socialist party European (PSE). February 7th, 2004, Mõõdukad is converted into Social democrat Party (Sotsiaaldemokraatlik Erakond, SDE). The SDE defends the model of an social economy of market. Its values are work, the equality, social justice, solidarity and the Welfare state. The current leader is Ivari Padar.
