Smriti

Smriti is the name given to a whole of texts belonging to the oldest tradition of the Hindouisme but whose authority is considerably less than that of the Shruti or revealed texts. Smriti means in Sanskrit the fact of remembering, from where memory, tradition.

The principal function of the smriti was to fix the codes governing the control of the individual like his relations with the community and the company. But one finds there also considerations of a more general nature on the customs and habits, in particular in the legal sphere and the field of the ritual practices.

The corpus of the smriti varies according to the sources. In addition to the smriti themselves, one often included there the Vedânga, the Kalpasûtra and the Dharmashâstra, but sometimes also of the philosophical texts such as the Âgama and the Védanta, even the epopees (the Mahâbhârata and the Râmâyana) and the Pûrana.

There exist several tens of smriti named according to the wise ones or Rishi S to which they are allotted, of which 20 are regarded as major by the Yajnavalkya Smriti :
