Small train of Rhune

The small train of Rhune is a small line of Railroad with metric gauge Track which makes it possible to the tourists to go up until in top of the mountain of Rhune.

Inaugurated in 1924, it connects the collar of Saint-Ignace, to approximately 10 km in the east of Saint-Jean-with-Luz at the top of Rhune with 905 meters of Altitude, on the Franco-Spanish Frontière. Progressing at a mean velocity of approximately 8 km/h, it is with traction electric, while running Triphasé (food by two wire, electrical outlet by two bows) and provided with a toothed rack. Its exploitation is ensured since 1994 by the company Veolia Transport.

Invited to decide by referendum in 1978, the population of Sare rejected the creation project of a road leading to the top of Rhune, which allowed the small train with toothed rack surviving, and to the area to keep her originality.
