Small schools of Port-Royal
The Petites schools of Port-Royal is the name given to the educational system created by the brought together intellectuals with Port-Royal-of-Fields in the middle of the 17th century, whereas the controversy Jansenist made rage. These small schools functioned of 1637 with 1660.
Origin
The monastery of Port-Royal-of-Fields was more or less abandoned with the profit of that of Paris (for reasons of healthiness: the site was infested by the Malaria) when in 1637 Jean Duvergier de Hauranne, abbot of Saint-Cyran, decided to create on the spot a school for about thirty children, under the direction of a friend priest, Antoine Singlin. This school cohabits with the Solitaires , these intellectuals or characters of the world who decided to withdraw themselves to perfect their spiritual life. Number of them make the class with the children. The intellectual quality of the professors made Small schools of Port-Royal a place of intellectual excellence, but also a teaching place of experimentation and standardization of the language. The professors work out a new manner of teaching, based on the French language and either on Latin, which is revolutionist for the time. They thus dissociate educational system of the Jésuite S, which make the major part of their Latin teaching, even when the young pupils do not control it.
The professors deal with restricted groups (never more than 25 children) and found a relation Master-raises very strict but based at the same time on confidence and admiration. The discipline is severe but many the instruction teaching testify to a real concern of the psychology (even if the term is anachronistic) of the child.
