Hydrology

The flow of the Small Pail was observed for one 39 years period (1969-2007), with Castle-Saline, locality of the department of the the Moselle, located little before its confluence with the Seille. The catchment area of the river is of 143 km ², i.e. 92% of its totality.

The interannual medium flow or module of the river to Castle-Saline is of 1,25 m ³ a second.

The Small Pail present of the seasonal fluctuations of flow rather clear, with high waters of winter carrying the average flow monthly on a level located between 1,91 and 2,22 m ³ a second, from December to March included (maximum in January and February), and of low waters of summer from July to September, with a fall of the monthly medium flow going until 0,458 m ³ in August (458 liters a second), which remains rather consistent.

The VCN3 can fall until 0,17 m ³, in the event of dry quinquennial period, that is to say 170 liters a second.

In addition, the risings can be rather important, taking into account the relative exiguity of the catchment area of the river. The QIX 2 and QIX 5 are worth respectively 15 and 22 m ³ a second. The QIX 10 or calculated flow of decennial rising is worth 27 m ³, while the QIX 20 is assembled to 31 m ³ a second. The QIX 50 finally is worth 37 m ³ a second). The maximum instantaneous flow recorded with Castle-Saline was of 33,9 m ³ a second on May 26th, 1983, while the value maximum day laborer was of 32,7 m ³ a second on December 30th, 2001. By comparing the first of these figures with the values of the various QIX of the river, it appears that this rising a little more than of a vicennial nature and was statistically intended to repeat the every approximately 25-30 years.

The Lame of water past in the basin of the Small Pail is of 278 millimetres annually, which is moderated in the Lorraine context characterized by an often important pluviometry. It is definitely lower than the overall average of France, but especially than the catchment whole of the French area of the Moselle (445 millimetres), but however higher than the whole of the basin of the Pail (242 millimetres in Metz). The specific Débit (or Qsp) is assembled consequently at 8,8 liters a second and per square kilometer of basin.
