Alexis Therese Petit (October 2nd 1791 with Vesoul - June 21st 1820 with Paris) was a known French physicist for his work on heat. He made his studies with the Polytechnic school (X1811 Promotion) where he was professor of physics of 1815 to 1819, succeeding Jean Henri Hassenfratz.

He is known to have proposed in 1819, with Pierre Louis Dulong, a theory making it possible to explain the value of the Specific heat of the metals known under the name of Loi of Dulong and Petit.
