Sluis

Sluis (word Dutch meaning lock), in French the Lock is a commune of the province of Zealand (Flanders zélandaise) to the Netherlands.
  • 24.326 inhabitants (January 1st, 2006)

The city is located near the Belgian border and was with Damme an outer harbor of Bruges in XIVe S. It was then with the mouth of the Zwin, today ensablée.

In 1340, to the beginning of the War One hundred Year old, was fought there a naval battle, the Bataille of the Lock, during which the English fleet of Edouard III pushed back 190 French naves there.

During the Second world war, the city was mainly destroyed in 1944 at the time of the operation Switchback for the conquest of the estuary of the the Scheldt.

To see

  • the town hall (Stadhuis) dominated by a Belfry of XIVe S., the only one existing in the Netherlands.
