Sluice of Antioche
The Pertuis of Antioche is a Détroit located in France in the department of the Charente-Maritime and separating the Ile de Ré (in north) from the island of Oléron (in the south).
Towards the west, the sluice gives on the Atlantic Ocean. Towards the east, north in the south, are the port of La Rochelle, the town of Châtelaillon-Beach, the island of Aix opposite the point of Fouras, the estuary of the Charente between Fouras and the island Madam. The end of the sluice is at the level of the viaduct of Oléron between Castle-with Oléron and points it of Chapus (Marennes).
The origin of its name comes owing to the fact that it was the access road privileged at the beginning of the towns of Saintes on the Charente and of Rochefort towards the the Middle East where the Templiers had the Principauté of Antioche.
In the aim of protection the port of Rochefort, it was surrounded by many fortifications (extremely of Saumonards with Boyardville, Fort Boyard, Fort Liédot and strong of the Roads on the island of Aix, citadel of the Castle-with Oléron, fortress of Brouage).
The Ile de Ré is surrounded:
- in north and the east, by the Breton Sluice;
- in the south, by the sluice of Antioche;
- in the west, by the Atlantic Ocean.
The island of Oléron is surrounded:
- in north, by the sluice of Antioche;
- in the south and the east, by the Sluice of Maumusson;
- in the west, by the Atlantic Ocean.
