Sluice (Vaucluse)
Pertuis (in Occitan Of Provence Pertús according to the traditional standard or Pertus according to the Standard mistralienne) is a common French, located in the department of Vaucluse and the area Provence-Alp-Coast of Azure.
Geography
Between the Durance and Luberon, Pertuis is located in country of Acute, of which it is the capital. It is located at a score of kilometers in the North of Aix-en-Provence and entered since January 1st, 2001 the Community of the Country of Aix-en-Provence creating a community inter-department thus.
Access
The secondary road 973 cross-piece the commune on a East-West axis and passes by the city. North, arrives secondary road 119 and of the south, the 956.
Highway 51 at an exit on the common neighbor to the south (Meyrargues), to a few hundred meters of the limit of commune.
SNCF railway station towards Aix-en-Provence and Marseilles (line closed until 2008).
Relief
The unit is rather flat with light foothills and all the same the first reliefs of the Massif of Luberon in the North-West and a hill coming to die on the village since Bastidonne in the east.
Geology
Geologically, one finds mainly alluvial deposits (grounds of quaternary) in the zone around the bed of the Durance in the south and that of Eze. One finds marnes and limestones with sandy clays on the relief (Eocene - Oligocene) in the east of the borough. The remainder, around the borough and in the north of the secondary road 973, is primarily composed of molasses limestones, sands and marnes of Miocène with all the same, in the North-West, another relief with conglomerated of Pliocène and Miocène.
Hydrography
The Eze crosses the commune in the north-eastern/south-western direction and will be thrown in the Durance which passes to the south of the commune, in edge.
There exist many irrigation canals.

Toponymy
Sluice comes from Latin “pertus” and indicates one perforated, a passage.
History
Cité in 981: " Pertusum".
Priory of the abbey of Montmajour.
12th century, construction of a castle seigneurial.
1460, the King Rene makes gift of the city with Jeanne of Laval, his second wife.
1493, Attached to France, Pertuis receives from Charles VIII, King de France, Count de Provence and of Forcalquier the privilege of inalienability to the Crown and the flower of Lily on its blazon, privilege rare for a city.
In 1560, Pertuis resists the seat of Paulon de Mauvans, captain Protestant.
In 1590, Henri IV creates a rival Parliament of that of Aix, which does not recognize it for king, in Pertuis, where the members of Parliament go who are faithful for him.
1596, destruction of the castle.
16th at the 18th century, the country houses develop on and around the commune at the same time as the local economy. It is amongst other things the culture of the mulberry trees for the worms with silk.
1837, creation of a bridge on the Durance and 1880, of a way of railroad, then canals irrigation a little later… but it is the stopping of Greenhouse-Ponçon into 1952 which will finally make it possible to put an end to all its risings and to thus facilitate a more important use of the alluvial part of the grounds which border the Durance.

Economy
Economically, agriculture and tourism are the main activities of Sluice and its surroundings. A long time known like a capital of the Potato, this activity is now declining. The vine is very present with the production of a wine with Appellation of Controlled origin “Coasts of Luberon”. One finds also producers of honey, of goat's milk cheese, melons, or of cherries. Tourism, much more recent, more or less developed as that of Luberon at the same time and continuous to develop (Tourist office, hotels, camp-site, rooms of hosts, lodgings, etc).

Sluice profits from a Community network of bus by the Communauté of agglomeration of the Country of Aix, a train all the 30 min (sometimes every hour) between SNCF railway station of Sluice and the coach station of Aix-en-Provence, and an urban network of bus with 3 regular lines intra-Sluice.
Education
The city is located in the academy of Aix-Marseilles. It profits from the nursery schools (4 in all) " Aimee Meynard" , " of Parc" , " The Fleuri" Field; and " Roch" saint; , of the elementary schools (5 in all) " Albert Camus" , " Georges Brassens" , " Burliere" , " Henri Crevat" and " Pierre Augier" , of the College S " Marcel Pagnol" and " Marie Mauron" , and finally the College " Valley De Durance".
