Slowdive
Slowdive was a group of pop Dream formed in 1989. It signed a contract with the label Creation of Alan McGee on which it published three albums before separating in 1995: certain members of the group (Goswell, Halstead and McCutcheon) will then leave to form Mojave 3. The musical style of the group belongs clearly to the movement Shoegazer, all at least on the first two albums. Pygmalion is stripped more and more electronics, but the pieces of the group remain despite everything very melancholic persons.
Career
Goswell and Halstead knew themselves since childhood, and the first was a large fan of the Smiths. Savill was before in the Eternal group. The group claims not to draw its name from the song éponyme of Siouxsie & The Banshees, but of a dream which the bass player Nick Chaplin would have made. The first demonstrations left at the same time as the EP Slowdive at the end of 1990 to England; the sound of the group was influenced by the Cocteau Twins like by their neighbors of label My Bloody Valentine, with an intensive use of effects of éthérées guitar and voices. Criticisms (NME and Melody Maker) were enthusiastic, and two other EP left in 1991. The first album Just For has Day was written and recorded in 6 weeks, and arrived at the signal 40 albums to England.
The English musical press, at the time, was interested by the incipient scene Grunge, and sonorities shoegaze of Slowdive, Ride, Chapterhouse had fallen in disgrace. American label SBK Records moved back the coming out date of their album after a viral marketing campaign which turned to the fiasco, after a business of vandalism on a statue). At the beginning of 1992, the formation undertook a round in the USA with Wrinkle (the two groups left Split 7" together;), and turned over to England for the recording of their second album.
This album, Souvlaki , brings to the group a critical success. Famous the Brian Eno will collabra with Slowdive on two pieces. " Souvlaki Space Station" is influenced by the Dub, " Dagger" and " Young stag She Comes" indicate the direction which will take Halstead and Goswell a few years later: country-rock'n'roll. Several pieces, such as " Alison" and " When the Sun Hits" are more in the style of the first album. The first copies of the British version were provided with " Blue Day" , a compilation of the majority of their first pieces, sold separately in Japan and in certain European countries. Same the years the group left " 5EP" , a EP made up of four pieces of influence Ambient.
As for the first album, American distributer SBK delayed the exit, and the group made a round during the summer 1993, in first part of Catherine Wheel, before the album left finally in February 1994. It included in this American version a resumption of " Summon Velvet Morning" and three pieces of " 5EP". When Slowdive was able to make a new round in the United States to promote the album, SBK stopped the financial support with the group in the middle of the round, and two other rounds the same year were entirely financed by the group.
Scott left the group in 1994 because of artistic dissensions, informant that the use of an electronic battery for " 5EP" its role in the group had reduced. It was replaced by Ian McCutcheon. The last album, Pygmalion, were almost the work of Halstead alone. It moved away from the oneiric sounds and dreampop their beginnings to venture towards a tone minimalist, following the example groups such as Seefeel, HAS R Kane, and Labradford. The album put an end to the contract between the group and Creation.
After Split
After the rupture with Creation, Halstead, Goswell and McCutcheon wrote an album rather influenced by the country, and signed at 4AD Records, under the name of Mojave 3. The grupe exists still to date.
The Savill guitarist formed Monster Movie, another group of pop dream which left four albums until now.
Simon Scott formed the Televise group.
Halstead and Goswell also left the albums solo on 4AD.
Influence
" Dagger" gave place to a recovery by The Hope Blister, and " When The Sun Hits" was taken again by The Gathering.
A tribute album in the electronica kind, " Blue Skied An' Clear", left in 2002.
