Sloop

At the time of the navy with veil, the sloop anglophone deformation of launch , or more exactly the sloop-of-war , indicated in England, the ships smaller than the frigates, armed with ten to eighteen guns on only one bridge. English distinguished two principal alternatives from sloop :

  • the ship sloop which with its three masts was equivalent about to the French corvette.
  • the brig sloop with two Mast S, is called brig in France.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the sloop term indicated a ship of anti escort underwater, armed with gun of 102 mm and depth charges. At the time of the Second world war, it yielded the place to the corvette S, then with the frigates.

Nowadays, the Sloop is a Gréement of Bateau to veil, generally bridged and with Quille (contrary to the Dériveur), and which has only one central mast. The Bôme located in bottom of the mast supports the mainsail, the Foc is in front of the mast.

One distinguishes in the boats with only one mast:

- the sloop, comprising a sail of before: the jib

- the Cutter with two veils of before: the jib and the Trinquette

It is the most current shape of the livable boats of average size. The Dragon is a famous sporting type of sloop.
