Slit-scan
The Slit-scan is a proceeded photographic and Cinéma tographic, in which one intercalates a mobile mask (where a slit was cut out) between the camera (or the camera) and the subject to be photographed.
Cinematographic use
Used classically in static photography, to obtain blurs and deformations, Slit-scan was sophisticated to enter the creation of spectacular animations. It makes it possible to obtain a multicoloured flow of psychedelic type, which involves the spectator in a luminous maze changing.Per hour of numerical, this kind of effect is usually carried out by data-processing animation. Slit-scan is on the other hand a mechanical process, adapted for the cinema by Douglas Trumbull at the time of the realization of the film 2001: the odyssey of space by Stanley Kubrick for the last sequence “ Jupiter and with beyond… ”. It requires a machine imposing, able to move the camera and the support. This type of effect was included in other productions, as well with the cinema as on television.
Description
It is about an animation created image by image. Its principle rests on the relative movement of the camera compared to a source of light, associated with a long duration. Everyone already saw photographs taken of night, where the headlights of the cars are stretched in long luminous lines. The process of Slit-scan is similar:- an abstract coloured reason is painted on a transparent support.
- It is deposited on the pane of a luminous table and is covered with an opaque mask, where only one or more slits were cut out.
- the camera (placed in height on a slope vertical and decentred compared to the luminous slits), photography only one image while going down.
- Result: at the beginning of race, when it is distant, the camera records a rather precise image of the luminous slit. Gradually, this image increases and shifts, until disappearing from the field. One thus obtains a luminous drag which joined the edges of the screen.
- One repeats these stages for each image by shifting the mask slightly, which introduces at the same time a variation of the colors and position of the drag to generate animation.
As one can realize it, this effect is very expensive in times of realization. A 10 seconds sequence will require 240 handling at least.
External bonds
- Reconstitution of the initial reasons used for '' 2001, the odyssey of space '' (one finds there images inspired by nature, corals, flowers and geometrical figures)
