Vernier is a common Suisse of the Canton of Geneva.

Description

Second locality of the canton and 17th of Switzerland in term of population (31630 inhabitants in July 2006), Vernier developed considerably since the Années 1960, becoming also one of the more big cities of French-speaking Switzerland.

Its position with the crossing of several important axes attracts a great number of tertiary sector and secondary. Nevertheless this relative prosperity went hand in hand with an increasing impoverishment of the cities which compose it. Symbol of the great urban changes of the years 1960, Lignon (7000 inhabitants) or Avanchets (6000) are not always adapted to the socio-economic changes of this beginning of 21e century.

History

Sliding gauge is yielded by the France to Switzerland in 1815.
