Slavery in Mauritania

The Esclavage in Mauritania continues to exist although it was abolished in 1981. It relates to the descendants of the controlled blacks there are generations which are called today " Moors noirs" or Haratines in Mauritania and works partly still like slaves for the " Moors blancs" , or bidhans .

One does not know exactly the number of the slaves in this country, but it is estimated that they are hundreds of thousands. The expert one of the modern Esclavage Kevin Bales estimates that the proportion of slaves in the total population is highest of the world.

The government Mauritanian denies the existence of slavery in the country.

There are organizations in Mauritania like El Hor and S.O.S Slaves which fights against slavery. August 8th, 2007 the Parliament of the country adopted a law criminalisant ten years the slavery, punished of imprisonment.
