Slab City
Slab City or The Slabs (33°15 ′ 32 ″ NR, 115°27 ′ 59 ″ W) is a place of camping located in full desert of the Colorado, in the South-east of the California, where squatteurs and owners of vehicles of leisures of all find themselves the North America.
Origin of the name
Name Slab City comes from the plates ( slabs in English) and from the pilot concrete pylons of the military base given up since the Second world war.
History
After the closing of the base, a group of soldiers settled there and the place was always inhabited since, although the number of residents started to decline in the middle of the Années 1980.Thousands of campers, pensioners for the majority, use this site during the winter months. These “birds of winter” remain there only for the winter, before migrating again towards North in spring towards fresher climates. The temperatures during the summer are indeed intolerable, nevertheless, an hard core of approximately 150 inhabitants resides all the year at it. The majority of these “Slabbers” survive thanks to the State aid (social security, IF…) and thus found themselves in too poor Slab City because but also because of a strong desire of freedom and independence with respect to the US government.
Operation
The site does not comprise any rule and there is no tax for the carpark. There are not electricity, not running water or other services public of the kind. Many campers use power stations or solar panels to produce electricity. The food can be found in the small town close to Niland, with five kilometers in South-west.
Located directly at the East of the federal highway of Califonie 111, the entry of Slab City is easily recognizable thanks to the coloured Salvation Mountain: a small covered hill of paintings and verses of the Bible.
