Skirmish

In the Military language , one names skirmish a Combat (in general unexpected) specific occurring between two patrols or detachments.
The skirmish quickly was identified like effective means of testing the forces of the Ennemi on a reduced scale. If the superiority in armament of the adversary appears obvious there, one will have thus avoided exposing large troops to it, and the limited range of the attack - not resembling a concerted plan - avoids generalizing an engagement. If on the contrary the enemy reveals his vulnerability, one knows that the moment is undoubtedly favourable with a general attack, given at one more favorable time in the preceding case.
The concept of skirmish exists also
- in Géopolitique and is used to qualify a combat between great powers (in general economic, but possibly ideological or spiritual)
- in policy, where it constitutes a means of probing the involved forces before passing or not to an attack of greater width.
- in the field of the video games of strategy, it represents a part personalized on a chart of which all the options are paramétable by the player, and of which the part is playable against one or more human adversaries or the computer.
