Skiffle

The skiffle is a folk kind of Musique, of influence Jazz, Country and Blues. It has as a characteristic to incorporate instruments arranged starting from domestic accessories: Washboard ( washboard ), low with a cord making resound a case with the ( tea-chest low ), Kazoo S, violins cut in cigar boxes, combs rubbing paper against… The harmonic base uses traditional instruments (Guitare S, Banjo S, Mandoline S, Piano S).

The origin of the skiffle goes back to the beginning of the 20th century, with La Nouvelle-Orléans (one spoke at the time of spasm bands or jug bands ). In the Years 1920 and 1930, one finds a form of skiffle with Louisville (Kentucky) like with Memphis. The name comes from a recording in 1925 of the group Jimmy O' Bryant and his Chicago Skifflers. There will be also in 1948 daN Burley & His Skiffle Boys.

The skiffle had its hour of glory with the the United Kingdom at the end of the Années 1950, where it was a very popular kind. Lonnie Donegan is most famous representing, although he quickly forsook the arranged intruments (only its first album includes a washboard). He was an international success with a resumption of the song of the bluesman Leadbelly, Rock Island Line . Other British groups of skiffle are Gin Millet Skiffle Group, Billy Fury, as well as Quarrymen, first group created by John Lennon which will become later The Beatles, Bill Wyman of the futures Rolling Stones played of the skiffle with the RAF during its military service in 1957 with Casey Jones

The skiffle was a style release for the explosion of the British popular music of the Années 1960. By its simplicity, it opened new horizons with the young people of this time, bringing the hope to them to write themselves of the songs and to become famous.

The skiffle was as of the beginning of the year sixty replaced by the rock' roll and the incipient pop-rock'n'roll, with the Beatles and Rolling Stones.
