Skeidarásandur
The Skeidarásandur ( Skeiðarársandur in Icelandic) is vast the Sandur being in Iceland in the South of the Vatnajökull between the Skeidarájökull and the Atlantic Ocean. It draws its name from the river Skeidará which it course of North in the South.
He is regarded as the largest sandur of the world with a surface of 1 300 km ².
It was modelled by many the volcanic eruptions which occurred starting from the Grimsvötn, of the Bárdarbunga, the Hvannadalshnjúkur, etc and in particular the Jökulhlaup S which they started.
The most recent jökulhlaup was held in 1996 with the favor of an eruption of Grimsvötn. The maximum flow was estimated between 45 000 and 50 000 m ³ /s whereas the normal flow of Skeidará is of 200 with 400 m ³ /s. the deposit of Sediment S.A. evaluated with 12,8 million m ³ and certain parts of the sandur received a ten meters thickness layer.
The trunk road n°1 (Hringvegur) which makes the turn of Iceland crosses the sandur and the section which traverses it in the form of dams and of bridges was finished in 1974. The road was partly carried by the jökulhlaup of 1996 and was rebuilt since.
