It opened the 1961 after one year of construction. The initial investment of 10 million $ is due to the financier Angus G. Wynne, Jr, which made S fortune in the real estate and oil. The park succeeded in spite of many changes of owners and extensions to generate a strong multitude and important incomes.
History
Project and Construction
After a visit of the park Disneyland recently open (1955) to Anaheim in California, Angus G. Wynne decides that its state of the Texas was to have an amusement park. The design begins in 1959 under the direction from Wynne and the Great Southwest Corporation, like with the support of various investors New York board. The construction of the park begins in August 1960.
Origin of the name and Opening
The name of the park “Six Flags Over Texas” comes from the six various nations which controlled in the history the territory of Texas: France, Spain, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the States confederated of America and the the United States of America. The little story would like that Wynne wanted to call in the beginning the park “Texas under Six Flags”, but his wife protested that Texas cannot be under anything. The original park was cut out in several sections like the Spain and Mexico , cutting which it still preserves and which defines the thematisation of attractions and buildings. The park opened with the public the Tuesday the 1st er August 1961 in the shape of an pre-opening test. The park was composed of six sections: Mexico, Spain, France, the Confederation, Texas and modern Époque. It included/understood a score of attractions. The price was of 2,75$ for the adults and 2,25 for the children, comparable with the tariffs of Disneyland. The carpark cost 50 hundreds, 35 for hamburgers and 10 for drinks.
The opening ceremony took seat only on Saturday, August 5, 1961 and accommodated: 8374 visitors. The park attracted during the first season, which was completed on November 25th, 1961, more: 500000 visitors.
The years 1960
Years 1960 are one decade of expansion for the park. Many attractions are added thus that two new sections: Boomtown (mushroom town) and Tower Section named because of an oil derrick built in 1969 and used like panoramic Turn. The park sees also the birth of two great classics of the amusement parks, the logs ( Log Flume ) in 1963 and the Train of the mine Runaway Mine Train in 1966.
The number of visitors then reaches almost the 2 million per annum. In 1969, the park is resold by Angus Wynne with a regrouping of investors around Jack Knox.
The years 1970
The park continues its growth and its expansion during the years 1970 and as of 1971 changes direction. The company Central PEN Railroad takes the control of the park. The park adds two Russian mountains, several attractions and a new sector: Goodtimes Public garden . N the other hand the park closes several attractions having lost their popularity. In 1975, the park offers a new mascot, the inventor Cyrus Cosmos who will be visible in several publicity campaigns.
In 1978, the park cumulated since its opening 30 million visitors.
The years 1980
Years 1980 see the addition of three attractions of additional Russian mountains like into 1983 of a section for the children thematized according to the character of CAP-Man. This last is replaced in 1985 by the characters of the Looney Tunes. The park launches also three festivals:
- Spring Breakout (pause of spring) launched in 1984 and presenting concerts and animations for the students
- Fright Nights
- Holiday in the Park
The years 1990
Years 1990 are a little poor compared to the previous decades. But the park opened the decade in brass band with Texas Giant, of the Russian mountains. After one record year, the park engages during one dull time with changes of management, the arrival of the characters of Looney Tunes. At the end of the years 1990, the park launches a system named FastLane comparable with the FastPass of Disney.
Unfortunately the majority of the additions of the years 1990 (for example the zone on Gotham City) are rather far away from the original topic of the park but the park counts at the end of the decade 10 Russian mountains with feelings.
The years 2000
In 2000, the park added the Russian mountain Titan and renovated the section Looney Tunes the USA.In 2002 the park reopens Put it Magnetica but stops the festival texan.
