Sitting Bull

Sitting Bull (“Bull Sitting” in French) - March 1831 - December 15th 1890) is a chief of tribe and Homme medicine of the Sioux Hunkpapas, of which it is the main thing resistant vis-a-vis the American army . Its name of origin, Tatanka Iyotake , means in language Sioux “male bison which rolls itself in dust”.

Biography

It was born with Bullhead in the area from Grand To rivet in the South Dakota in March 1831. Its name of childhood is " slow" " lent" name which given him because it took its time before answering has a question. It killed its first bison with old ten years and marked its first blow is fourteen years old at the time of a battle against the Crow S (For the Indians it was as valorous of touching an adversary as to kill it). In 1857 it adopted its nephew " One Bull" after the death of his/her own son. One Bull will take part in all the battles carried out by Sitting Bull, will follow it in exile to Canada, and, will be present at the time of its assassination by the Indian police force in 1890.

It takes an active share with the wars of the plains of the Années 1860, including a raid against Fort Bufford in 1866.

It accepts the displacement of its people on July 2nd, 1868 envisaged with the treaty of Fort Rice. This treaty was signed after the visit at the Sioux (on June 20th, 1868) by the Father De Smet (Belgian Father Jesuit who évangélisa of the thousands of Indians). After the rupture of the treaty caused by the United States, it directs rising Sioux. It is joined by tribes cheyennes and, together (1500 warriors and 4500 civilians), they destroy under its direction the 263 men of the general Custer with the Bataille of Little Big Horn the June 25th, 1876. Sitting Bull did not take part itself in the battle as a man-medicine, but entrusted the command to its war leaders Crazy Horse, Gall and others.

Continued by the American army, it is forced to flee with the Canada (Lebret, Sask.). In 1880 he refuses to go has an American delegation come to meet there. Sitting Bull and its people went in 1881 in strong Randall (South Dakota). After 2 years of imprisonment, it was led to the reserve of " Great River" It takes part in the Wild West Show of Buffalo Bill in 1885 in the United States and in Canada, it will not be authorized has to go to Europe, then it spends the last years of its life in the reserve of " Great River" with the Dakota.

December 15th, 1890 his/her son Foot of Corbel and dies to him assassinated by members of the Indian police force under pretext of resistance whereas they came to stop it for his participation supposed in a protest movement. (Siiting Bull was shown by the Miles general to be at the origin of the " Ghost dance" (Dance of the spirits) which since the autumn gathered Indians more and more). Sitting Bull was killed by " Bull Head" , even killed to him by " Wrestling the bear". Except Sitting Bull and his/her son, seven partisans and five polciers lost the life there this day.
