Sit of Mantoue

Mantoue (Italy), on the Mincio, underwent two Siège S; one in 1796 - 1797, during the first countryside of Italy of Bonaparte; the second, less known and less length also, in 1799, whereas the “republics sisters” installed in Italy the shortly after the victory of 1797 saw all reversed by the risings partly caused by excesses of the Directoire in Italy, but also poked by the English and the Austrians.

May 30th with the July 31st

The May 30th 1796, the Armée with Italy of Bonaparte has just bored the last line of defense of the Autrichiens to Borghetto, on Mincio. : 5000 men of Colli, beaten in Borghetto, take refuge in Mantoue, defended by the Spanish general Canto d' Yrles and: 8500 men approximately.

Mantoue then is located in the middle of a double lake formed by Mincio and is connected to the dry land by 5 roadways cut by drawbridges.

The seat of the city is entrusted to the general Sérurier who lays out, initially, of approximately: 9000 men, who should come to reinforce them: 12000 of the general Vaubois. The renewed attack of the Austrians on the backs of the army of Italy obliges Bonaparte to raise the seat of the city temporarily, because on his manpower, the Sérurier general must send: 5000 men in reinforcement with Augereau and them: 4000 have the role of covering the road of Piacenza.
