Sit of Bastogne

The head office of Bastogne was held in and around Bastogne at the time of the Bataille of the Ardennes. Very important strategically, Bastogne was the object of all covetousnesses on behalf of the Axe like Alliés. The seven main roads of the of the Ardennes mountains converged all worms the small town of Bastogne. The crossing of the roads of Bastogne was vital for the Allies to reduce the speed of the German advance. The Germans intended to continue their progression and to improve the supply of their columns. The battle started mid-December and finished in January 1945 with the continuation of the German retirement.

Deployment

As the Allié command had determined that the Germans would counter-attack by the the Ardennes, of the troop movements started to reinforce the key places. Thus, to stop the German attack, the 101e airborne division coming from its quartering of Mourmelon-the-Large (France) in the truck and the Combat Command B of the the 10th armor-plated division was redeployed in Bastogne.

Attacks of Noville

On December 19th and 20th, the 506e regiment of parachuted infantry supported by the TEAM Desobry of the 10th armor-plated division started the combat against the the 2nd division Panzer with Noville, in the North-East of Foy. They détruirent 30 enemy tanks and from 500 to 1000 killed or wounded. That delayed the German attack and made it possible the 101e to be folded up to organize the defense of Bastogne. December 20th, the battalion lost 13 officers and 199 enlisted out of 600 soldiers.

Battle

The Alliés forces quickly were encircled by the 5th Army Panzer, exceeded of number and deprived of clothing making it possible to face the winter. Because of execrable time, the Alliés forces with the back station could not properly supply the encircled troops.

When time improved on December 23rd, Alliée aviation took again the flights, delivering vivres and ammunition as well as a tactical air support.

Rupture of surrounding
