Sit and battles (S) of Kut-el-Amara

August 27th, 1915 . the MIDDLE EAST . MESOPOTAMIE

The British general to sir Charles Townshend, recently returned from a permission for health reason, in India, receives the order to advance on Kut-el-Amara, an importance bases Turkish located on the Tigre, with 500 km in the north of the principal British base of Bassora. Thonshend estimates that its force of some 11.000 men is unsuited.

Are offensive, which begins the September 12th , is seriously blocked by intense heat, the lack of river transport and the need for detaching one of its two divisions in order to protect its fragile lines from communication.

The January 4th, 1916 , the British make a first attempt for atteidre Kut-el-Amara, besieged by the Turks since December 1915. The column of changing, the 19.000 soldiers of the corp of the Tiger of the general Peg wood Aylmer, must face more 30.000 Turks. The British projection is deferred and takes again only the April 5th .

The April 15th , the British planes start to release vivres on the besieged garrison of Kut-el-Amara. The commander of the garrison, the general Sir Charles Townshend, affirmed that its vivres would be exhausted the 19 . The day before, the British column merchant on Kut-el-Amara was pushed back by the Turks.

The April 23rd , its vivres being practically exhausted and the projection of the force of changing being blocked, the commander of the British garrison, asks for the permission of start talks of rendering with the Turks.

The April 29th , the British of Kut-el-Amara go. Some 13.000 soldiers are make prisoners. Approximately 2.500 sick or wounded are slackened by the Turks, but the remainder by worms the camps. Approximately 4.800 of them will die of disease, epidemic or for lack of care and food.

22 February 23rd, 1917 , the general to sir Frederick Maude, commander-in-chief of the British forces who advances on Baghdad, lance a great attack on the Turks with Kut-el-Amara. It launches a false offensive on the line of the Turkish forces in order to cover its troops which cross the Tiger, then it directs great attacks on the two sides Turkish. After his defeat in the offensive which will take the name of (second battle of Kut-el-Amara), the Turkish commander, Kara Bekr Bey, orders with his troops to fold up himself on Baghdad. The Turks give up Kut-el-Amara the February 25th .
