Sisu
The term sisu is a Finnish word difficult to explain and translate into French. One could propose courage , notch , perseverance or determination , but it is more still, it is a true frame of mind. A periphrasis in the form of watchword is sometimes employed to affirm its extreme character: In anna periksi , I will not return the ruins (as long as I will be alive).
It is a character trait, it is a quiet and been obstinated force, which helps the Finnish to conclude their objectives. It is the heart of the Finnish heart, the patient eagerness which makes it possible to face all the situations.
The Finnish literature often describes this frame of mind without inevitably naming it. One can quote the first pages of “Here, under pole star” of Väinö Linna where a sharecropper is seen, at the end it XIX century, study and carry out the draining of a marsh, thoroughly and without never giving up in front of the difficulties.
The civil resistance of the Grand-Duchy of Finland to Russianization to the same time represents the collective aspect of the sisu. Only one murder (the assassination of the governor Bobrikov) and a been obstinated and serene resistance of all the layers of the company (of the clergy to the press) preserved Finland not only assimilation forced but also of wild repression or deportation of which had been victim of the countries annexed by the Tsars like Poland. This same collective aspect of the sisu will be found with leaving the Second world war which will see Finland facing, with the success which one knows, in the crushing conditions of the treaty of Paris and with the Finlandisation that everyone predicted.
More recently, the official visit in Qatar (April 2007) or in Saudi Arabia (October 2007) of Mrs. Tarja Halonen, president of the Republic of Finland is an example of the quiet and serene force which characterizes the sisu: it is seen received by the authorities of these countries with Islamic law drawn up well, circulating in the streets and accompanied women by the country to the covered hair. Mrs. Halonen is naked head (in hair one would have says in the good company of the Belle Time), in pants, and the discovered throat, in the daily behavior of hundreds of million Western. Nobody seems constrained and no Finnish flag (with the blue cross) was flaring all over the world.
One of the examples more striking is the capacity of the pilots of Finnish, multiple rally victorious of tests and championships in the discipline, to concentrate at the point to seem to control under hypnosis… a champion such as Marcus Grönholm, for example, is able to traverse 20 km of special without blinking eyes once.
