Clohars-Fouesnant is a common rural department of the Finistere, in the area Brittany, in France.

Located at 11km of the prefecture Quimper, at the center of the triangle formed by the three roads connecting Bénodet - Fouesnant - Ty' Knell.

History

  • Ethymologie: Clohars comes from “ Cluttuual ” of the Breton old man “ clut ” (famous) and “ gual ” (valorous).
The Cartulaire of Quimper of 1086 cite la parish of Cloetgual . Then one finds: Parrochia Croezual Foenan (in 1285), Croezgual Foenant (towards 1330), Croezval (in 1349), Crozoual Foenant (in 1426), Clohal Foenant (in 1535), Clohar Foenant (in 1640).

  • With the number of the fortified towns, the Feudal castle of Kergoat and the castle of Bodigneau appeared in good and due place in the defense system of the Cornwall of the south and were used of garrison for the members of a league. This irrefutable fact remained until the catch of Quimper by the Maréchal of Aumont which, after its victory, ordered the dismantling of the fortified towns. Bodigneau profited from an emergency regulation: article XVI of the capitulation which the Marshal granted on October 11th 1594 stipulated that with regard to the fortifications of Bodigneau, will be provided there for their demolition by Mister the Marshal for the least fault and oppression that to make could be. The people remained wise and Bodigneau escaped the destruction.
