Sirius Black

Sirius Black is a fictitious character of the saga Harry Potter, written by J.K. Rowling. The author makes some for the first time mention in volume 1, in chapter 1.

Its family

Sirius Black was born into 1960 from Orion and Walburga Black. The Black family is an old line of wizard of blood-pure, their currency is “Always pure” and the traditional house of the family was Serpentard. Sirius was a rebel in his family, hated her parents - them-even did not like it - and its difference was well marked when it was allowed at the house Gryffondor. His/her brother Régulus (Serpentard), one year his junior, was the preferred son of Black. He became Mangemort and died in 1979.

Youth

Sirius meets James in the train leading them to Poudlard. They became better friends and quickly met Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrow. The quartet called " Maraudeurs" , and were troublemakers. Sirius and James were very popular and they were also very brilliant in their studies, they could sometimes be rather haughty and arrogant (as Harry could note it in the pensine). Before spending long years in prison, Sirius was very tempting.

When Sirius, James and Peter discovered that Remus was a werewolf, far from dropping it, they worked hard to become - illegally Animagus. In their animal form, they could accompany without Remus fear at the time of its transformation, Sirius became a large black dog called Patmol by the others.

Like James, it had a relation full with tough hatred with regard to Severus Rogue which was in the same year as them in Poudlard. One could note that more than fifteen years after the school, they were always hated.

In 1976, at its 16 years, Sirius flees of the family home which he hated to go to James, Potter regarding it as their second wire. His/her Walburga mother never forgave him and disavowed it. One year later, the Petty thieves finish their schooling and James marries Lily Evans, Sirius is his witness. In 1980, small Harry is born and his/her parents name Sirius like godfather.

The night of October 31st, 1981

In 1980, the war against Voldemort already started. The Petty thieves and Lily are members about the Phoenix. The Potter family is in danger because Voldemort discovered a prophecy aiming their Harry son. They are cloîtrent on their premises with Godric' S Hollow and make of Sirius Black their guard of the secrecy, only knowing to him where they hide, Voldemort which can pass in front of on their premises without them not seeing it. But Sirius finds the idea too obvious so that Voldemort does not think of it and convinces them to take in Peter secrecy in the place.

However Peter, too loose, already passed on the side of Voldemort and allows him to kill James and Lily. During this time, Sirius, which doubts the plan, passes to Peter to check that it is in safety but its hiding-place is empty, it flies away quickly in Godric' S Hollow on its flying motor bike and discovers the disaster. Hagrid, sent by Dumbledore to collect the Harry baby tries to comfort Sirius which requires of him to entrust Harry to him, puiqu' it is its godfather, but Hagrid follows the instructions of Dumbledore. Sirius gives him its motor bike then, by explaining to him why it would not need any more.

It left to the continuation the traitor Peter and wedged it in a street full with Moldus. Peter shouted then with round that Sirius had killed James and Lily then it caused an enormous explosion, which killed ten moldus, cut a finger to make believe that Sirius had killed it and flees by the sewers, in its shape of rat. Sirius was stopped without any resistance of its share: it had remained in the street and it laughed, its nerves had undoubtedly released. Barty Croupton sent it to Azkaban for the murder of Potter - since nobody knew that he was not any more the Guard, he seemed to be the culprit and for that of Peter, which one had found only the finger.

12 years with Azkaban

With the prison of Azkaban surrounded of terrifying the détraqueurs, it is very difficult not to yield to the madness after little time. However, during all these years, Sirius resisted because it was known innocent, and as it was not a thought " heureuse" , since it was nevertheless locked up, the détraqueurs could not destroy it. Its ability to be transformed into dog helped it also much to remain healthy of spirit, without its blind guards not realizing there, because for them, a dog releases same the " aura" that a man who becomes insane. One day of 1993, it accepted the visit of the Minister for the Magic, Cornelius Fudge, which was in inspection. The Minister besides was very impressed frame of mind " normal" of Sirius, it expected that it became insane, like all the other prisoners. It gave him even its Gazette of the wizard, Sirius wanted apparently to make cross words…

While reading the newspaper, Sirius fell on an article which spoke about the Weasley family which had gained a package of galleons which they had used to go to remain in Egypt, a large photograph of the family was spread out in the gazette. He recognized Peter Pettigrow immediately, in his shape of rat which it missed a finger with its leg, called Croûtard, it had become the rat of Percy, which Ron had inherited thereafter. Peter was thus still alive, and only Sirius knew it, that quickly became an obsession for him, he spoke about it in his sleep, and he decided to escape to kill Peter, to avenge James and protect Harry. All these years with Azkaban had thinned down it considerably and in its shape of dog, he managed to thread between the bars and to swim, of the island where the prison to the coast was.

In escape

The head of Sirius Black, first man to be itself ever escaped from Azkaban, was quickly placarded on all the walls: the public enemy n°1 was in mare. Before moving towards Poudlard to North - where Croûtard (Peter Pettigrow) was going to turn over to the re-entry, it passed by Surrey to be able to foresee Harry, the day of its escape from Dursley.

It penetrated first once at Poudlard, the corridors were deserted, it was the hour of the meal. It moved towards the common room of Gryffondor to find Peter there, but the Large Lady of the table did not let it enter, furious, it lacerated its fabric with stabs. Pattenrond " binds amitié" with him and he then asked the cat to bring back the rat Peter for him, but Pattenrond failed. It then brought to him the list of the passwords of Neville. When it was presented in front of the table of the Knight of Catogan, it could thus return, it found the bed where Peter was but Ron, which awoke while shouting, caused its escape. Peter, which trembled since he had learned the escape from Sirius, decided to flee, he bit itself to make accept his death - as he had already done and hid.

After the setting with died of Buck the hippogriffe, Ron, which had already to find its rat at Hagrid, was drawn by the leg by Sirius which trailed it in the entry dissimulated under the Willow Bruiser until the howling Cabane. Harry and Hermione precipitated with its cases and discovered that the large black dog was not other than Sirius Black. Harry, which had heard the history according to which Sirius was the person in charge of died of its parents, refused to believe its apparent divagations about Peter. At this point in time Remus, which had very followed on the chart of the Petty thieves, arrived in the hut and étreignit Sirius like a brother, it had included/understood the trickery of Peter. They then were still stopped by Severus Rogue which saw an good occasion there to condemn those that it had so much haï. But Harry, of which the instinct said to him to listen to Sirius and Remus, put Rogue out of state to harm.

The two Petty thieves returned his true form to Peter and Harry could not make differently than to accept the truth: Peter is uncovered. It prevents then its godfather and Remus to become assassins by killing Peter as they had envisaged and decides to deliver it to the détraqueurs. Unfortunately, Remus which did not take its Tue-Loup potion this evening transforms into werewolf and in confusion, Peter succeeds in changing and fleeing. Sirius loses blow any chance of rehabilitation and is made prisoner with Poudlard. While going up in time, Harry and Hermione succeeded in saving Sirius of the kiss of the detraquor - aspiration of the heart which flew away on the back of Buck, to him also saved this night.

Once again in escape, Sirius cachea in a tropical area, far from the détraqueurs. It corresponds regularly with its Harry godson, for whom it counts much. When he learns that its scar hurt him, Sirius which regards that as the last element of a succession of strange rumors he is also in correspondence with Dumbledore which knows it innocent, he decides to return in North, for Harry, with the great distress of this one. Sirius is always actively sought by the ministry for the magic. It hides with Buck in a cave (close to Pre-with-bacon) where it survives by eating rats… It gives information and councils to Harry all along the year.

After the third task, after the rebirth of Voldemort, Sirius is there when Harry tells its evening in the office of Dumbledore, then it takes care on Harry of the infirmary. It leaves Harry to go to contact the former members about the Phoenix according to the wish of Dumbledore.

Of return to 12, Square Grimmaurd

Sirius inherited the house of 12 Square Grimmaurd, where it passed its childhood. It at once placed it at the disposal about the Phoenix so that it becomes the general headquarter about it. It is besides - according to its dires- the only useful thing that it could make. Rémus moves in with him but is often absent due to mission. Sirius must remain cloister in this house which he hates: its head is put at price for 10.000 galleons and the mangemorts know its statute of animagus thanks to Peter. When Harry finds it during the holidays, it finds it depressed and enough disaster. Not only he is once again prisoner but he must regularly face the mockeries of Rogue - which never fails to point out to him that he is useless and pathetic and with the invectives of the elf of Kreattur house which reproaches him for having made suffer his/her mother, with which he dedicates a worship.

He as often as possible keeps contact with Harry by means of letters or by his night appearances in the chimney of the common room of Gryffondor, but it will miss being made capture by Ombrage which supervises all fires of Poudlard. Sirius behaves like a father and a big brother with Harry, by almost explaining to him all the plans of Voldemort, or by supporting the initiative of the association of the Army of Dumbledore. That is reproached to him by Molly Weasley, which shows it to confuse its godson with his best friend, James the father of Harry. Hermione is besides of agreement with this theory and when Harry, in anger, asks to him whether she also believes it insane she, she answers very simply that she believes that it was " very only during very longtemps".

At the end of June, thanks to its growing capacities, Voldemort sends to Harry a false vision according to which Sirius is its prisoner in the department of the mysteries of the Ministry. It is a trick to take possession of prophecy and Voldemort needs Harry to have it. Harry, Ron, Hermione, Luna, Ginny and Neville fly away with the ministry and are found quickly threatened by a band of Mangemorts carried out by Lucius Malfoy and Bellatrix Lestrange. Thanks to Rogue which gave the alarm, members about the Phoenix, whose Sirius - which could not have supported to be put on side still once, as quickly as possible join Harry and its friends with the Ministry. With the variation of the battle which follows, Sirius faces his/her Bellatrix cousin: they fight close to a mysterious arch in front of which a veil is tended which seems to undulate all alone. A green jet sent by Bellatrix touches Sirius, its face posts a pout surprised and its body is curved with grace to fall behind the veil. Harry which saw all the scene wants to precipitate to go to seek it, but Lupin catches up with it for preventing some: " it is finished… " , he says him. Harry street then with the continuation of Bellatrix which is quickly joined by Voldemort in person. The Lord of darkness flees after a combat with Dumbledore, but the entire Ministry nevertheless has time to see it. Its return is now irrefutable.

Dumbledore succeeds in convincing the Ministry that Sirius was innocent of all the crimes which one showed it, it is rehabilitated on a purely posthumous basis. It is difficult for Harry to make its mourning: it lost a godfather who liked it, protected it and which represented also a paternal figure, without counting that he was the best friend of his father.

Last appearance

The death of Sirius and that of Dumbledore increased at Harry the desire of in découdre with Voldemort.

In the final volume, whereas Harry moves towards an unquestionable death, it uses Pierre of Résurrection to reveal his parents, Remus and Sirius. They appear less solid than human alive but the more real to him than a phantom. They have all the four a young, happy and serene appearance. Each one says a word of affection and encouragement to Harry. When he asks Sirius - which appears more beautiful and more young person that never if death is painful, he him answers that it is faster and easier than to fall deadened. They ensure all the four Harry which they will remain with him until the end. When Harry worries about know if Mangemorts will see them, Sirius answers him that nobody of other can see them because " we belong to toi".

Etymology

Sirius is the most brilliant star of the constellation of the dog, Sirius means “burning”, reference to the heat wave associated with the constellation with the large dog, Black wants to say black in English (the animagus of Sirius Black is a black dog)

In films

Sirius Black is interpreted by Gary Oldman in the third, the fourth and the fifth film.
