Sirion

In the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, the Sirion was, with the First Age, the most powerful river of the area of the Beleriand, which it divided into two Western parts and East.

It took its source with Eithel Sirion on the buttresses of the Ered Wethrin, skirting the western edge of Ard-galen and receiving on its Right Bank water of the Rivil in the marshes of Serech, before engaging in the steepsided valley separating Ered Wethrin from Dorthonion. It comprised there a river island called Tol Sirion . From there it ran towards the south on 130 miles before being thrown in bay of Balar in a delta called Bouches of Sirion . It received many affluents, the Lithir, the Teiglin and the Narog on its Right Bank, the Mindeb, the Esgalduin and the Aros on its left bank. Towards half of its course, after its confluence with Aros, it was delayed and divided into many channels in the marshes of Aelin-uial, then fell in cascades on the level from a very long change of incline called Andram and circulated three miles under ground before its Résurgence with the Portes of Sirion .

Two fortresses were built by the Ñoldor on the course of the river: Barad Eithel with its source and Undermined Tirith on the island of Tol Sirion, which was famous Tol-in-Gaurhoth after it had been taken by Sauron.

Sirion was submerged with most of Beleriand following the Guerre of the Great Anger.
