Sirimavo Bandaranaike born the April 17th 1916 and deceased the October 10th 2000, is a political woman sri lankaise (Sri Lanka). It was the first woman of the modern history to occupy the station of Prime Minister in a country. It was leader of the party of the freedom of Sri Lanka Sri Lanka Freedom Party. Its passage was not transitory since it was Prime Minister with three recoveries: of 1960 with 1965, of 1970 with 1977 and of 1994 with 2000. At the time of its third mandate, she exerted with in the chair her daughter Chandrika Kumaratunga. She belongs to a family which dominated the political life in Sri Lanka all second half of the twentieth century.
One year after its election, she declares the state of emergency to face disobedience a prolonged campaign of the Tamoule minority, which protested against its action aiming at replacing English by Sinhala like official language. In 1964, she and its cabinet knew the defeat at the time of general elections.
In 1970, it returned to the head of the country to the following elections. Its policy evolved to the left thanks to its close strong personality and its connections with the China and future the Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. In 1972, it declared its country a republic, which changed the name of Ceylon into Sri Lanka. It operated some nationalizations during this mandate.
His/her Chandrika daughter became president in 1994 and thus restored the image of the Bandaranaike family. She named her mother Prime Minister, but for this period of 1994 to 2000 this station had become more ceremonial than effective, the constitution having changed since. Chandrika wished despite everything to place a younger person at this station. Sirimavo Bandaranaike renonça with regret with the capacity the August 10th 2000. She succumbed to an heart attack while returning to her after having voted last once at the time of an election, at the 84 years age.
