Sira

Sîra or sîrat is an Arab word which means Biographie. In the context of the Islam a will sîra is a biography of the prophet Mahomet. The form of Arab plural siyar is sometimes used in the same direction. However the term Siyar indicates also the traditional laws of the war.

Life of Mahomet

The oldest biography of the prophet Mahomet is that written by Ibn Ishâq (death towards 768). This biography reached us only in the shape of the version altered by Ibn Hichâm (death in 828 or 833). It is known under the name of Biographie of the messenger of God, Muhammad Ben `Abd Allah or the biography of the prophet or Biographie due to Ibn Hichâm .

Tabarî (death in 923) devotes in the Chronicle a chapter to the biography of Mahomet

Ibn Kathîr (death in 1327) wrote a Biographie of the prophet .

Notice

Not to confuse to confuse will sîra and sirât where the ṭ must be marked!

The word sirât is a transcription of an Arab word meaning way, way that one frequently finds in Coran. It is then the way to be followed.
