Siona
The Siona , are Amerindian people of the Amazonian area . Their territory and their presence are binationales in Ecuador and Colombia.
In Ecuador, they constitute one of the thirteen indigenous nationalities recognized. Their number which is evaluated there between 350 and 400 people (COPENDE) and their territory in the area of Directs (close to that of the Secoya of which they are near culturally), are currently only one fraction of what they could represent before colonization. They were decimated by new diseases and were pushed back at the time of the exploitation of the natural resources of the forest since rubber and wood to the oil currently which causes serious contaminant water pollutions for the population. In spite of many difficulties and dispersions of the communities, the Sionas try to defend their rights and culture by means of an organization socio-policy: the Organization of Indigenous Nationality Siona of Ecuador (ONISE), member of CONAIE.
