Sintra

Sintra (in the past Curved) is a city portuguaise located at 15 km in the North-West of Lisbon in the District of Lisbon (area of Lisbon and under-area of Large Lisbon). The perfect harmony between the nature and the inheritance of the city led UNESCO to classify the city with the Inheritance of Humanity, in the category “Landscape cultural”, in 1995. History

  • Antiquity
As of, the city would have been inhabited by romanized populations; it then formed part of the territory of the Roman city of Olisipo, future Lisbon.
  • Moslem Period (713-1147)

The town of Sintra appears in geographical texts (Al-Bakri, S.), like dependence of Lisbon and the main thing urban center after this one.
  • the Reconquest

At the beginning of the 11th century, the Christians undertake the reconquest of the area: in 1147, the king Alphonse Ier of Portugal (first king of Portugal) made reinstate the city in the Christian bosom; this stage marks the beginning of the construction of convents and monasteries in Tightened.
  • 15th century

Sintra is located in the province of the Estrémadure, with the foot and on the northern slope of Serra of Sintra, a narrow green chain at the granitic tops which lengthens between Lisbon and the coast of the Atlantic.
