Singjay
Definition
A singjay , contraction of the English singer (singer) and Deejay , (Disc jockey) is a vocal artist Reggae which mixes song and style deejay (which corresponds in reggae to a spoken/sung/stressed vocal style also called " toast").
Two interpretations are then possible:
- It acts most of the time is of a deejay which alternates phases sung with phases " toastées" in its pieces, that is to say of a deejay of which the " toast" is more " mélodique" , i.e. more sung and less spoken/stressed than usually.
- Some rare people also consider that it is about a singer who introduces phases toastées into his pieces, design less widespread but nonincompatible with the broad definition of the singjay.
Appearance and development of the style singjay
The first singjays were deejays more melody than their contemporaries. Today, this vocal style was institutionalized and become an intermediate style between the pure song and the style deejay. In the years 1970: Big Youth (which sings almost on certain pieces). Years 1980: Eek-HAVE-Foam, then Tenor Saw, Nitty Gritty, King Kong (reggae). Years 1990 and 2000: Tony Rebel, Anthony B, Sizzla, Junior Kelly, Norrisman, Warrior King, Chuck Fender, Richie Spice, Fantan Mojah, Lukie D, Gyptian.
