Sinfonia Domestica

The Sinfonia Domestica ( Symphonie domesticates ) was composed by Richard Strauss In 1902.

It is about the second autobiographical work of inspiration of the musician, written shortly after a life of hero of the same vein. It is dedicated besides with his wife and her son, Franz.

The " term; symphonie" is paradoxically rare in the work of Strauss: if two compositions of youth are excluded, he wrote of it only one other, the Alpine symphony . The structure of its Sinfonia Domestica is unusual besides, with five parts of very unequal size, being undoubtedly connected more with a " Symphonic poem " of great width that to a " Symphony " traditional. Strauss speaks about it besides by employing on several occasions this first term.

The side " domestique" contrast with the particular richness of the orchestration of which is usual Strauss. It describes the serene family atmosphere with three, with its moments of tenderness and arguments.

First takes place on March 21st 1904 with the Carnegie Hall of New York with Wetzler Symphony Orchestra under the direction of the type-setter. Anecdotiquement, the following representations took place in the hall of a department store of the American city. The first European one takes place with Frankfurt shortly after and Gustav Mahler directs the partition to Vienna this same year. The writer Romain Roland makes some, later, an eulogistic private criticism but wants to disregard the side music to program of work.

Topics of its symphony domesticates will be taken again by Strauss in two posterior partitions: its bridal Prelude and its Parergon zu Sinfonia Domestica ( additive with the symphony domesticates ), this last being a part " for the hand gauche" for piano and orchestra written at the request of the pianist Paul Wittgenstein who had lost his right hand during the First World War.

Work is composed of five movements and the execution time is from approximately three fifteen minutes.
