Simulator of control
The term simulator of control in general indicates a terrestrial simulator of vehicle like a Motor vehicle, a railway Véhicule or even that of a Navire.
It is a simulator controlled in which a conducting real is able to drive a virtual vehicle .
As opposed to what one can imagine, a terrestrial simulator of control is more complex than a Flight simulator, inter alia for the following reasons:
- control on the ground is done primarily by the vision of the details of the external scene and in interaction with all the objects and mobile close: the external scene is essential and the traffic around must seem reagent with the actions of the driver whereas in an aircraft only the phases of takeoff and landing require a precise external sight,
- a terrestrial vehicle is subjected to movements, changes of acceleration and variations speed less full but more frequent than an aircraft,
- the driver led according to the perception which it has of its movements and the perceived position of its vehicle and much less by the reading of its instruments.
Professional simulators of control
The advantage of the simulator of control is to place the conducting in an environment comparable with that of a real control but where the environment and the vehicle under control because are completely represented by software models.
The simulators of control are currently used for:
- the research and development related to the development of new vehicles, subsystems of vehicle or systems of Assistance to control,
- studies and research on the behavior of the driver, the human factors related to control: Vigilance, Attention, Perception,
- the Formation of the professionals of control like the drivers of heavy trucks.
The simulator not being never a total representation of reality, it can induce skews in the training or the behavior of the driver compared to the real situation.
Some large simulators dedicated to the studies and research
One can estimate that the number of these simulators in the world is assembled to one or two hundreds and one quotes here more " volumineux" :- For dimensions, largest in the world is American NADS brought into service in 2001 at the University of Iowa;
- the following, by order of seniority, has more modest dimensions:
- simulators of the Swedish research center VTI with Linköping whose first into service in 1984 was brought and the last in 2004.
- the simulator of Daimler-Benz brought into service in 1986 in Berlin;
- the Ultimate simulator brought into service in 2004 at the Technocentre Renault;

Plays of simulation of control:
- simulations of rallys or races of motor vehicles
- Formula 1 or others
- Great Tourism and Rally
- Heavy trucks
- races of motor bikes
- simulations of control of train
