Simplon pass

The Simplon pass is a collar the Alps located in the Valais. Culminating to 2008 m, it is open all the year and fact integral part of the trunk road Swiss A9. 62 kilometers length, its declivity is of 9%.

History

The road was built between 1801 and 1805 by engineer Nicolas Céard financed by Napoleon Bonaparte; the objective being to open a passage to its artillery, but it with still took several years for its completion and it cost more than eight franc million. The collar with given its name to old the Department of the Simplon. It is also Napoleon who issued on February 21st, 1801, without very consulting the canons of the Saint-Bernard of the creation of an old people's home in very similar to that of the collar of the Large-Saint-Bernard, because he had highly appreciated the utility of this one.

Highway network

The highway network is improved considerably since a score of years. Several turns were removed and the way was shortened thanks to the construction of many bridges and viaducts.
