Simon de Lipnica

Simon de Lipnica , (Szymon Z Lipnicy) 1435 or 1440 - 1482, is a Polish saint, priest of the Ordre of the minor brothers Franciscains.

Life

Simon de Lipnica was born towards 1435 - 1440 in Poland, with Lipnica Murowana in a modest family.

It was a pious child, requesting much, very attached to the Blessed Virgin.

In 1454, it integrated the Université jagellonne of Cracow. It is there that it could hear preachings of saint Jean de Capistran, whose enthusiasm filled with enthusiasm crowd, and attracted youth towards the life franciscaine.

Thus Simon joined the convent of Stradom with Cracow and was ordered priest in 1460. He exerted his ministry initially with Tarnów, before becoming preacher with the cathedral of Wawel, as of 1463.

He left in Italy in 1472 for the translation the body saint Bernardin His, then, he followed the general chapter of the Minor Brothers to Pavia in 1478 before going initially to Rome on the traces of the apostles Pierre and Paul, finally on the steps of saint François d' Assise, in Holy Land.

During the epidemic of plague to Cracow, between 1482 and 1483, Simon brother was devoted inlassablement to the care of the patients and dying. It was in its turn reached by the disease and died on July 18th 1482 after having asked to be buried under the threshold of the church in order to be pressed with the feet by all those which passed there.

Beatification - canonization

  • Béatifié on February 24th 1685 by the Innocent Pope XI, in recognition of the worship " ab immemorabili which was returned to him, its cause in canonization was taken again by the Pope Pie XII on June 25th 1948.
  • It was canonized on June 3rd 2007 by the Pope Benoît XVI at the same time as:
    • Giorgio Preca
    • Karel Van Sint Andries Houben
    • Marie-Eugenie Milleret

Thus, filled of the mercy which it drew from Eucharistie, it did not hesitate to come to assistance of the patients struck by the plague, contracting this disease which also led it him to death.
