Simon de Cyrène
According to the Gospel of holy Marc, Holy Matthieu, and Holy Luc, Simon de Cyrène was obliged, by the Roman soldiers who led Jesus to the martyrdom to be crucifié there, to help this one to carry its cross:
- “While leaving, they found a man of Cyrène of the name of Simon, and required it to carry its cross. ” (Matthieu)
- “They require to take its cross a passer by which returned from the fields, Simon de Cyrène, the father of Alexandre and Rufus.” ( Marc )
- “As they took it along, they reflect the hand on a certain Simon de Cyrène who returned from the fields, and charged it with the cross to carry it behind Jesus. ” ( Luc )
- “They require to take its cross a passer by which returned from the fields, Simon de Cyrène, the father of Alexandre and Rufus.” ( Marc )
Owing to the fact that its town of origin, Cyrène, in Libya, was located in North Africa, the legend made of Simon de Cyrène the first black Christian saint. The tradition wants that its sons Alexandre and Rufus became missionaries. Their quotation in the Gospel of Marc supposes in any case that they had to belong to the first Christian community.
The fifth station of the Chemin of cross reminds this episode of the Passion of Christ.
Simon de Cyrène carries the cross of Christ, as Isaac “carries the wood” of the sacrifice.
