Simon and Garfunkel

Simon & Garfunkel is a American Duo of pop music to the folk influences, consisted of Paul Simon and Arthur Garfunkel. They were among the most popular artists of the Années 1960.

History

Paul Frederic Simon and Arthur Ira Garfunkel met in 1956 with the Forest Hills High School with New York, where they started to play both in a group called “Tom & Jerry”. They started to write their own songs as of 1957, and they recorded one their first songs of Rock-and-roll, Hey, Schoolgirl , whose estimated sales reached 100.000 to 150.000 specimens.

However, their following attempts in 1958 did not have the success of this first attempt, and the duet separated. They were found in 1963 thanks to their common passion for the music folk, and recorded their first true album, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. in 1964, which had a very mitigated success. Little time after the recording, the duet separated once again, and Simon left in England, where it recorded an album solo, The Paul Simon Song Book , in 1965. During this time, the song The Sound off Silence , drawn from the album Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. , was a success with delayed-action, the great surprise of Paul Simon. It turned over then to the the United States, where the group reformed one second time to record new titles in the same style. In 1966, the album Sounds off Silence appeared with the hit-parades, grace in particular to the republication of the title with success of the same name.

In 1967, Simon & Garfunkel composed the original soundtrack of the film the Prize winner ( The Graduate ) of Mike Nichols. The album was first with the hit-parade in 1968, in particular thanks to the tube Mrs. Robinson , which was rewarded with the Grammy Awards for 1969.

But the relations became tended in the duet. The album Bridge Over Troubled Toilets , left in 1970, was their last, and this, in spite of an extraordinary success (n° 1 of the sales during six weeks, and several Grammy awards in 1971). Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel separated this year there, while at the same time the sales of their Greatest hits flew away. Simon engaged in a career solo, whereas Garfunkel moved towards the cinema.

Since then, Simon and Garfunkel on several occasions reconstituted their duet for exceptional concerts; as in 1981 for a free concert with Central Park which brings together 500.000 people, or in 2003 for the opening of the Grammy Awards, where they were rewarded for their contribution of more than four decades to the popular music. Then in 2004, double CD - DVD entitled " Old Friends Live One Stage" immortalise the round " Old Friends Tour" in 2003 through the USA and Europe taking again all the standards of the duet which have made success for 40 years of Paul and Article.
